The live TV footage showed Friday, showing a US military aircraft arrived in the South which carrying the remains of US Korean War dead collected in North Korea. The American soldiers were seen lining up for a ceremony after the landing of US military cargo plane on around 2 am GMT (6 am UAE) at the Osan Air Base.
After the historic June summit between Kim Jong Un and US President Donald Trump, Pyongyang agreed to return the remains. According to the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, the recuperation will begin soon and the South Korean official cited by Yonhap.
The White House said in an official statement:
“Today’s actions represent a significant first step to recommence the repatriation of remains from North Korea and to resume field operations in North Korea to search for the estimated 5,300 Americans who have not yet returned home,”
The agency said, before sending them on for forensic identification in Hawaii the US defence officials are expected to examine the remains in South Korea. According to the Pentagon, on the Korean Peninsula during the war, more than 35,000 Americans were killed, including 5,300 in North Korea alone and out of which around 7,700 are still considered missing.
