Tick Talkers is not in any way connected to the Tik Tok app. It is booming to be organisation trying to spread happiness.
Azif, a young man from Trivandrum was this youngster with so many ideas at one point. He found motivation from National Service Scheme activities to do something for others. This changed everything. The exploration of a different path leads him to the Youth Wing of YMCA, UNI-Y, Trivandrum. He joined YMCA while pursuing his degree in Mar Ivanios College, Trivandrum. Later on, he became the President of the club. Azif had participated very actively in cultural and social activities in his college. This also led him to find an independent platform where he could do various activities with a cause.
After leaving the club, Azif wanted to do something on his own. What he had in mind was a happiness management squad. Two motives were to spread happiness and develop leadership skills. And thus Tick Talkers name gets fixed in his mind in 2017. The name Tick Talkers were selected as the Tick mark represents correct.
Discouragement was what this youngster received when he put forward the idea. Emerging as an individual organization and having no parental organization support is quite challenging. Azif found encouragement in the words of Dr. Achuth Sankar, Head of the Department of Computational Biology and Bioinformatics in the University of Kerala whose words to do things differently and thinking unique. Archana Gopinath, the founder of The Reading Room in Trivandrum, is also a person who has encouraged and inspired Azif in going forward with the idea of Tick Talkers. This happened around the 2018 floods of Kerala. Now Tick Talkers is an energetic team of youngsters in Trivandrum with unique ideas ultimately leading to spreading happiness.
The first program of Tick Talkers was the ‘Vellayani Lake Clean-Up Drive.’ It was quite successful. The project was undertaken by Dave who as part of an internship at Kanthari. Many other organizations joined in this project later on. The Tick Talkers were also the promoters and volunteers for Green Army programs like Green Hunt and Green Congress for raising environmental awareness. Tick Talkers also conducted a blood camp when there was a lack of blood donors in the city. They also volunteered for the organization HOPE (Hold On Pain Ends) and Students for Earth for similar blood camp activities. Tick Talkers also played an active role in collecting study materials for poor students by the Social Media Forum. Another project that Tick Talkers volunteered was the Run Trivandrum Run project, which was an awareness marathon against the use of Drugs, and conducted by Trivandrum Indian.
The latest project ongoing is ‘Book Talk.’ Tick Talkers were contacted by the Tribal Development Co-ordinator of the Pottomav Tribal Colony to set up a new library. Pottomav has been dreaming of boosting reading skills for long. The aim was to collect a thousand books and now have exceeded a thousand, thanks to many who were willing to donate books. Many good souls have contributed to this project. The project will be a reality in the month of December 2019.
Another upcoming project is the Youth Conclave to kick start in Trivandrum in January 2020. Tick Talkers is the financial management team for the event. It is a program involving many other volunteers as well.
The main challenges of Azif and his team, the Tick Talkers include not having an office of their own. At present, these youngsters meet at the parks to discuss events. These youngsters have a lot of ideas in their minds, however, implementation requires funding. For the Tick Talkers to be a properly established organization, they are required to register the organization. Without funds and sponsors as well as support, the Tick Talkers find it hard to make things happen.
The Tick Talkers are this bunch of youngsters trying to make the world a better place. It is to be noted that in this era where youngsters are complained about not to stick to the traditional ways of life, people like Azif are thinking out of the box. This indeed is a good start to spread happiness.
